Colorado Player of the Year Leaks Commitment
By Ray Powell

Pierce Hornung, the 6'5” guard who was named All State as a sophomore and 4A Colorado Player of the Year as a junior, has informed Colorado Basketball Insider that he committed to Colorado State University on Tuesday.
Heading into his senior year for the Ralston Valley Mustangs, Hornung decided on where he’ll play his college ball: for Tim Miles and the Rams. The decision didn’t seem to be a hard one, either.
"I wanted to stay close to home and my brother Brock will be a freshman student there this year," Hornung said. "I really liked the coaching staff too."
Ralston Valley's star shooting guard brings the kinds of weapons you'd expect from the states best player: A deadly outside shot, an ability to defend against any position on the floor and the power to throw down awe-inspiring dunks. After averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds a game throughout last seasons campaign for a state title, he’s proved it.
Brian Forbes, in a story for the Denver Post earlier this year, elegantly put it, “Pierce reigns supreme in the paint in a way that would make Dennis Rodman blush…”
And he’s a guard?
Hornung led his team to a 21-6 record last year, a second straight final four appearance and hopes he can continue leading his team back to the promise land when they make the jump to 5A next year. He’ll then be able to answer any critics about playing against lesser competition.
Hornung will get the chance to do so with one Mustang in particular next season, younger brother Grant, a sophomore who will compete for a starting spot.
"He probably won’t start but he is very good and would make a great sixth man, and his potential is definitely there." Hornung said.
It’s good to see he’s not looking too far into the future. While he’s signed with CSU, his focus is still on a state title and his biggest opponents.
"Regis and Eaglecrest will be the teams to look for next year." Hornung noted. "But we can play with anyone."
After beating Regis in the finals of the Metro tournament, and wining the CSU team camp, the Mustangs appear to be ready to not only make the jump to 5A, they appear to be ready to take it over.
And with a guy like Pierce, who could doubt them.
