Little Guard Displays a Lot of Game

R.J. Demps may be 5’9” but he’s quickly making a name for himself.  Demps is used to making excuses about why he hasn’t been recruited by more schools, however, this summer, he’s making it tough on teams to use that excuse any longer. Colorado Basketball Insider got a chance to get the latest on this star-in-the-making.

Demps , who played as a freshmen at Grandview and Smoky Hill as a sophomore, transferred again along with his coach Ken Shaw to Regis for his junior year. It was with the Raiders where he averaged 18 points and 6 assist a game, earning himself all conference and honorable mention all state.

"I just wanted to stay loyal to coach Shaw," Demps said after starting the summer off with the Colorado Force. "I needed to play with my teammates to make us a better team."

Regis has done just that. They won the CSU Pueblo tournament beating Thunder Ridge, taking second at the Metro Tournament losing to Ralston Valley and this past weekend making it to the finals of the Gold Crown Tournament before Demps and junior star Bud Thomas left to attend the CU camp.

Demps has finally been getting a little recognition, receiving recruiting mail from all the Colorado schools along with Cornell, Penn State and San Diego State.
They’re taking notice that he plays his game at a different pace.

"They look at me at me like I have no height but I come in there and blow right past them and they’re wondering, ‘what’s going on?’” Demps said. "If you can change the pace of the game like that it makes it hard for them to guard you."

Demps also gets it done in the classroom with a GPA of 3.0 and just took his ACT last weekend. He also is dating Miriah Williams, the outstanding point guard on the nationally ranked Regis girls basketball team.

"I can still beat her in 1-on-1 for now cause I have better strength." Demps joked. "But she is really good."

Demps may not have the height basketball coaches love, but who can forget that big things come in small packages.

Demps plays very big and finally people are taking notice.
